In class this week, we learned about acids and bases. Acids are substances that make your skin burn and react with most metals. Acids are also found in many foods and drinks that we consume daily. Bases are substances that taste bitter and are slippery. They are also found in home products. Bases are the chemical opposites of acids. We also learned that acidity is measured on the pH scale. The numbers on the scale range from 0 to 14, but can be outside this range. Acidic solutions have a number below 7, and basic solutions have a number above 7; 7 is neither a base nor an acid. I consume acids and use bases daily. I drink juice and eat fruit that are acids, and wash my hands with soap, which is a base.
ReplyDeleteThis week in science, we had learned about acidic solutions, bases, and how they are measured. Acids are found in many foods, like lemons, and tomatoes, and have a slightly sour taste to them. They also produce a burning a burning itchy feeling on the skin. Some acids are never to be tasted or touched, for they can be very hazardous. An acid is a substance that donates protons. A base however, is a substance that recovers protons. The taste of a base is bitter, and it is very dangerous to skin. If you would feel a base, it would feel slippery. Some bases include soap, laundry detergent, and ammonia. Strong bases are mostly dangerous chemicals, and should have no contact with your body. The way to measure an acid or base is to use the pH scale, which is divided into 14 sections, where the 7th section shows the solution is neutral and is a pure substance. Anything above the neutral section is a base, and anything below the pH scale is an acidic solution, the farther away the neutral zone is a substance, the more dangerous it is. This relates to me in real life because now I know the measurement of danger for the most common substances I use and how I must be real careful.
